3D Designing: The new ABCs for school students

3D Designing - The new ABCs for school students

The terms 3D modeling, 3D designing, CAD (Computer Aided Design), CAM, etc. are now becoming popular among the school students. In India, it is even refered to when speaking of STEM education or Tinkering labs. Two of the commonly known softwares / applications are TinkerCAD & SelfCAD.

TinkerCAD:

TinkerCAD is an amazing free-to-use web-application that school going students use for a variety of things. Using TinkerCAD's circuit, studemts can simulate an electrical or electronic circuit. It even has support for arduino.

Other than circuits, students can also use TinkerCAD to make simple 3D drawings that can even be 3D printed. Once a 3D design is made in TinkerCAD, it can be saved in .stl format. & Using softwares like Ultimaker Cura or Prusa Slic3r, the .gcode file can be created. The gcode file can then be fed to a 3D Printer to make the object.

The diagram above shows the steps to 3D print an object. If you do not have a 3D Printer, fret not because you can take your stl file or gcode file to your nearby 3D Printing Service Provider & they will do the job for you. For example, High Clouds (a startup) is providing CAD & 3D Printing services all across India. High Clouds is based in Greater Noida commercial belt & is popular among the college students in Greater Noida. Usually, the college students ask them to 3D print their CAD models for their college projects.

SelfCAD:

SelfCAD is the first choice for schools when it comes to CAD & rapid prototyping. Using SelfCAD, students can draw box models, organic models, convert 2D designs to 3D designs, edit the pre-existing models, import My Mini Factory's models. Apart from that, students can also render image, do texture baking, make 3D animations & slice a CAD model for 3D printing. So basically, SelfCAD is a powerful application. The best part about it is that it is compatible with all kinds of devices be it a laptop, PC, Mac, or tablets. All you would need is an internet browser.
